efficient 09/11/10 07:00 My Dell laptop with Win XP is 4 years old and, in my experience, that is over the edge of laptop's life, so I looked into different options for backup software. The IT guy at my company recommended Acronis as "the most reliable backup by far" and I also found many positive reviews online, e.g. in PC Magazine, so I decided to give it a try. Boy, am I lucky that I did. However, I want to share my experience of installing and configuring backups first. Before installation started, I saw a message that a new version is available, so I decided to download the latest one. Installation was straightforward and took only a minute or two. It was annoying to see inside the box a super long activation key (two lines, 64 characters is too much for a sloppy typist like me), but I also noticed there was a url for registration where I had to enter only a few first characters and then copy and paste the whole product key and complete activation.I was relieved to find out that Acronis has no problems working with Norton Security. A few years ago I tried backing up with Ghost and it never worked with Norton which is just bizarre considering that both products were from the same company.I use Time Machine for my Mac laptop, so I decided to do the same using Acronis and selected Nonstop option to back up the whole drive C: on a portable USB disk. Nonstop had no impact on my working with Word documents, so I'm not sure how long my first full backup was. Test recovery for a couple of files worked as expected. It was slightly annoying that recovery UI did not remember my column width settings from previous recovery and I had to adjust it every time, but I can live with that. I was eager to see how Nonstop would behave after disconnecting from my USB disk for several days and then connecting again because that's when Time Machine on my Mac always hangs. Nonstop was able to handle a weekly separation from a backup drive with no hiccups whatsoever and resumed working.Anyway, here is the punch line. It is very hot in California right now and my old Dell just couldn't handle a 100+ degree heat. It died on me a couple of days ago with BSOD, strangely appropriate for this occasion. Since I have several Windows only applications, reluctantly I got a new Dell with Windows 7. Scanning Acronis manual, I figured out that to recover only My Documents (I didn't need to recover old OS), the best option would be booting from Acronis installation CD into a special version of Acronis to recover my files. The recovery was not as intuitive as Time Machine, but a wizard walked me through and quickly I got back all my documents and pictures.I don't feel passionate about backup (or any other software) as some people who provided comments here, but I have to say that Acronis did a solid job in getting my data back. I will definitely buy a beer for our IT guy who recommended Acronis.
katrinatillotson 10/10/10 08:21 I prefer Acronis True Image over all of the other backup software I've tried. I'm not a computer expert so some programs are intimidating, but True Image is easy to understand. I can back up my whole hard drive or just some of my files. I can schedule backups so I don't even have to think about it. When I delete something I shouldn't have, I can search my backup and restore only what I need. When my laptop ceased to function, my data was all saved, and I was able to put it on the new laptop. Nothing was lost, thanks to True Image.
Zoso67 21/08/10 23:55 First let me say that I too have been in the IT industry for well over 20 years and I've been using Acronis for the past 8. 2011 a great product and I have not had any issues except one that was resolved with the latest update. The 2011 interface is much nicer and easier to navigate. The constant backup feature is a nice plus for backing up document folders and whatnot, in real time. The emergency disk creator works flawlessly and I've tested it with restores and have had no issues. The only issue I did run into was backing up my email using the built in function. It does not like Office 2010 64bit at this time. However Acronis support told me a patch is coming in the next week or two. But the constant backup function can be set for the outlook folder so the result is the same. This software has saved my butt many times. And 2011 once so far.My family and friends use it and have had no issues.
fl1180 03/04/10 14:35 I initially purchased this program to clone my c drive to a new larger drive. This program came as the most highly recommended cloning program for windows BUT I found out you have to buy the FULL PURCHASED program to get the cloning utilities. So, I went ahead and purchased the program. The cloning utility is flawless and quick. My new c drive was up in running in less than hour and i could tell no difference other than the size of the hardrive - it also didn't clone just my old c partition making my new drive look like two disks (most free shareware cloning programs do this). After cloning, i decided to use their backup software and have been very pleased with the speed of the back up, their imaging/compression software.I hope when the day come I have to use these backups, it's as easy as the guide and others say it is. Pros: It's very simple to backup you system. The non-stop feature is awesome so you don't constantly have to delete and create old to new backups. Best cloning utility in the "Windows-Sphere" and other goodies (i.e. Security and Privacy Tools)Cons: Be careful when ordering this product or upgrading to a purchased "full" version from the trial version. It brings you to a page with all of their products checked and will charge you for all of them. Make sure you only have what you want checked.
